It was over a decade ago while studying for my naturopathic degree, I learned about Oil Pulling. At that time, you did not hear much about this amazing ancient practice.
I remember during one of my annual dental appointments I mentioned oil pulling to my dentist and well, you would have thought I was prehistoric by the way he looked at me. Fast forward during another annual dental appointment about eight years later and I overheard my dentist in the other room tell his patient about the amazing results one can adhere by with this simple daily ritual.
So, what could one expect? Glad you ask…
The mouth hosts millions of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other toxins. Oil pulling detoxifies the body, creates superior dental hygiene, makes teeth whiter (no need for whitening strips), and supports gum health. This list is just a few of the remarkable benefits from this Ayurvedic practice of oil pulling.

Types of Oil to Use for Oil Pulling
Although oil pulling isn’t difficult it sure can take a little getting used to. You can use a few different oils such as:
- Coconut
- Sesame
- Olive
- Sunflower
Always use a cold-pressed, unrefined oils. Personally, I like coconut oil especially when first starting this amazing process.
For most, oil pulling is done first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
Directions on How to Oil Pull
- Start slow using ¼-1/2 teaspoon of your choice in oils. Simply
- Put it in your mouth and start swishing it around. You will want to swish and pull the oil around your mouth.
- Aim for 10 minutes in the beginning
- Rinse your mouth with warm salty water (sea salt)
- Finish by brushing with a good, natural toothpaste
Work up to 1 tablespoon of oil for about 20-30 minutes. Not as easy as one may think but within a few short days/weeks you will be a pro. I used to do this during my drive to work each morning.
When the oil has a milky watery appearance, you have completed the process. It is very important to spit the oil in the garbage or toilet, since the oil is filled with toxic bacteria, don’t spit it in your sink.
Benefits of Oil Pulling
Oil pulling has so many benefits beyond your mouth. Oil pulling is not solely an oral health treatment, when practiced regularly, the process benefits the rest of the body, it is known to aid in the relief of:
- Allergies
- Digestive issues
- Eczema
- Hormone imbalances
- Heavy metal detoxification
Whether you are experiencing a significant health condition or not, oil pulling will likely improve your health, your quality of life and brighten your smile.
